"If I can't have your money, I'll just have to bag your Bunny!"

"Wallace & Gromit" Curse of the Were-rabbit (Wallace & Gromit S.)

Only a year and a few months after it opened I finally got to see Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. I requested it from the library many moons ago and it came in this week!

It is a cracking good movie! Loaded with visual jokes, I will be watching it again because I know I missed some of them. The bunnies are so cute, and I am allergic to rabbits! It is primarily clay animation, but there is one scene with the Bun-Vac 6000 where that was computer aided I can't imagine how one would float cute little bunnies in the air otherwise.

The whole film is shot from Gromit's perspective. I just watched it again it with the commentary. The commentary is a love fest of sorts. They talk about the little bits, their influences, and they are just bumbling with joy. There was one scene that took a year to do!

A Prince rant

This is in response to a report that Prince was crazy because he was offering exotic dancers money to not dance and do something else with their lives based on this Sun article. :

Okay, I know people who have worked with and for Prince over the past 20 yrs. He likes dancers, his first wife was a belly dancer.

From my knowledge, he has always been a religious, non-drinking, non-drugging, pro-sex guy, that doesn't like women selling themselves for sex.

It has been several decades since I have seen him in the flesh sans makeup in blue jeans and a tshirt, but I am sure the man is as hot as he ever was. When I first saw him up close it took severe restraint on my part not to reach out and touch him ;-)

He is also not stupid. He has made a fortune for himself and helped set up the music industry in Minnesota without ever compromising his values or beliefs. He did it right in his home state. He has set up numerous other bands and businesses as well.

He maybe crazy, but it is of the "crazy like a fox" variety.

Jack made this comment,
Well good for him. Lots of people are perfectly willing to tell other people what to do, as long as t doesn't cost them anything. I appreciate a man who's willing to put his money whre his mouth is, especially when he doesn't have anything to gain by it (at least in this world).

Jack made this comment,
Seems like I read recently that Prince is a JW now. NTTAWWT, TIKO. BTINRUOJW. Oh. That's in the article you linked to.

*

Freakin JWs. I got no use for them.

*

But still, JW or not, I'm with "☮" on this one. In principal, anyway. Except that I don't know why he'd go to a titty bar if he doesn't drink, doesn't like the music, and doesn't like nekkid women. But it's nice that he gave the opportunityto do something different with their lives. IMO. YMMV, OC.

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. another time, another place, another life and why one should keep old email addresses

Written Oct 6, 2006

A few weeks ago, two young women stopped by the store, they said they were missionaries and were selling some jewelry to raise money. I knew immediately that one was Nepali, the other Thai and also that they were from the unification church. After they got over their shock, we had an interesting discussion about Minnesota, the troubles in Nepal, and where they weren't staying ;-)

The unification church has always struck me as so incredibly opportunist, they are like a giant multi-national corporation, they take advantage of all they can. During the war in Angola, they converted a Portuguese soldier who was also a musician and brought him to Boston. The house I used to live in on Beacon Hill was very close to the Unification church's headquarters there which was also the residence at the time of the Korean Ballet and the Go World band. I suppose my friend from the Unification Church never tried to convert me because I too lived in a religious residence, although I was not religious.

Where I am right now is the closest I have felt to being "home" in over 23yrs.
In some ways I have a few previous lives, my family knows as do some of my close friends. The few people who I let into my house maybe have an inkling if they recognize the signs, but then maybe not.

During this conversation my mind was thinking, they are dead, they are all dead*.

Yesterday I was going through through my junk mail folder on my old email address which I have had for a long long time... I was moving emails from my dad and a certain sock to my inbox while glancing at the spam and deleting it.
For a fleeting moment before I deleted I saw an English first name with Nepali last name, I thought how interesting spam is now using Nepali names.
I was musing that the particular last name is of someone from an ethic group that is maybe 3% of Nepal's population, at most 300,000 people, when I realized it probably wasn't spam and dug it out of the trash. It wasn't spam, it was sent to many people which is why it ended up in the junk folder.

This was what it said:

"Dear respected friends, colleagues and family of my father,

As you have most likely heard by now, my father was on the helicopter that crashed in Taplejung on the 23rd of September. His funeral took place within the week, however, in accordance with Gurung tradition, a bigger and more important funeral ceremony – the "Arghun" is scheduled to take place on the 13th, 14th and 15th of October at his house in Dhapasi.

This ceremony is a three-day ritual. On the first day, the spirit of the departed is invited back, on the second, there are conversations with the spirit – accomplishments are recited and on the third day, the spirit is made to understand that although there are loved ones remaining, the ancestors are waiting and it is time for the spirit to leave. I doubt I have captured all of the significance but it is the most important ritual for Gurungs and unique to them as well.

You are all welcome to the ceremony and I'm sure my father would be very happy if you could attend. To those who need to fly across the globe I hope this email comes in time to purchase the ticket. There will be hotels listed and tariffs for your benefit (see below). We hope to have some sort of accommodation at the house but it will be limited."

It is strange reading names I haven't seen in a very long time mixed with a few with whom I am still in contact. A small world too, as some of the names I have known in separate ways from the others.
Another time, a very different, simpler life.
We all wanted to change the world, some of us did, some of us still can, 24* who did are gone now.

*They were all dead-this was another one of those times when I hate being right

Nice guys!

Around 3pm today, I went to pick up the 77 yr old owner of the place I work since he can not drive for another few weeks. He lives out of the city where gas is cheaper, so I stopped for gas after I got him. After getting the gas, I am driving along and we hear a strange noise, I look around and don't notice anything. After a 1/2 mile down the road this guy in a huge black pick up truck motions to us. Another car honks and points at the back of my car.

Finally I notice my gas door is still open and I realize that noise was my gas cap flying off the car. I turn in across the blvd trying to decide, do I go back and look for it on a busy road or just close the door and go on? The owner and I are discussing it when the guy in the black pick up comes back. He tells me he thinks he knows where it is, he saw it fly across the medium. I am thankful I didn't hurt anyone.

So with the pick up in front, me following we slowly drive up the shoulder looking for the gas cap. The guy in the pick up finds it! brings it over, and screws it on my car, I never even got out of my car. I thank him profusely and he tells me it happened to his wife a few weeks ago and gas caps cost like $20 so he was glad to do it.

Then after work I call a friend of mine, and her husband gets on the phone and asks if he gets the tickets do I want to go with them to hear the The 5 Browns if he can get tickets. I said Yes! of course. I think he is actually going with us, normally I end up going in his place when he doesn't want to go to something. So far thanks to him I have seen some pretty strange stuff that was amazing including a benefit with Charlotte Church as the entertainment- she was lots of fun, and Neil Diamond-who had great seats for those in wheelchairs, which I was in at that point.

You Were a Cat

You are an independent person who inspires others with your dreams.

A calm protector, you will fight when you need to.

A Cat? I am allergic to cats! It seems to fit though.

You Have a Melancholic Temperament

Introspective and reflective, you think about everything and anything.

You are a soft-hearted daydreamer. You long for your ideal life.

You love silence and solitude. Everyday life is usually too chaotic for you.

Given enough time alone, it's easy for you to find inner peace.

You tend to be spiritual, having found your own meaning of life.

Wise and patient, you can help people through difficult times.

At your worst, you brood and sulk. Your negative thoughts can trap you.

You are reserved and withdrawn. This makes it hard to connect to others.

You tend to over think small things, making decisions difficult.

Laurie made this comment,
***You Have a Phlegmatic Temperament***

Mild mannered and laid back, you take life at a slow pace. You are very consistent - both in emotions and actions. You tend to absorb set backs easily. You are cool and collected.

It is difficult to offend you. You can remain composed and unemotional. You are a great friend and lover. You don't demand much of others. While you are quiet, you have a subtle wit that your friends know well.

At your worst, you are lazy and unwilling to work at anything. You often get stuck in a rut, without aspirations or dreams. You can get too dependent on others, setting yourself up for abandonment.

NOTE FROM LAURIE: As I said on Mr. Wang's blog, I only dispute the laziness trait. Tired, yes. Lazy, no.

Thanks Mr Wang

The World

The World

A film by Jia Zhangke

Review of The World

I just finished watching "The World." The characters are workers in a real theme park in Beijing called The World Park that displays miniaturized versions of the most recognized places of interest in the world. It also has Las Vegas style dance numbers and huge subterranean world for the cast members.

The discrepancy between the accelerated urbanization of Beijing is contrasted against the workers social and economic lives. They use cell phones and text messages for everything yet still retain many traditional relationships and family values. Animation is used to go inside the minds of some of the characters. The World workers are lucky, they have jobs, relatively safe jobs, places to live and food to eat but in many ways they are isolated and lost.

This is the first film Jia Zhangke has shot with state approval, all his previous films were banned, underground works. It isn't clear why this was approved, unless the state sees the surreal mix that is China today as a positive step toward the future.

I found it to be a very interesting, amazing and yet incredibly troubling movie. The cinematography is fantastic.

Another quiz-not sure its me, probably just my mood at the moment ;-)

What Color Are You?

Reds are motivated by POWER, seek productivity, and need to look good to others. Simply stated, REDS want their own way. They like to be in the drivers seat and willingly pay the price to be in a leadership role. REDS value whatever gets them ahead in life, whether it be at work, school, or in their personal relationships. What REDS value, they get done. They are often workaholics. They will, however, resist being forced to do anything that doesnt interest them.Reds need to appear knowledgeable. They crave approval from others for their intelligence and insight. They want to be respected even more than they want to be loved. They want to be admired for their logical, practical minds. I'm a White...(it definitely fits)...

WHITES are motivated by PEACE, seek independence and require kindness. They resist confrontation at all costs. (Feeling good is more important than being good.) They are typically quiet by nature, they process things very deeply and objectively, and they are by far the best listeners of all the colors. They respect people who are kind, but recoil from perceived hostility or verbal battle.

WHITES need their quiet independence and refuse to be controlled by others. WHITES want to do things their own way, in their own time. They ask little of others, and resent others demanding much of them. WHITES are much stronger than people think because they dont reveal their feelings. WHITES are kind, non-discriminate, patient and can be indecisive, timid, and silently stubborn. When you deal with a WHITE, be kind, accept (and support) their individuality, and look for nonverbal clues to their feelings.

What country are you?

You're Libya!

It seems that these days, you just say things to get attention.

Shock value is the really important thing for you now.

You used to have a cause, and this made you seem like a threat to the established order, but now you just want to say wacky stuff once in a while.

Air travel doesn't really mesh with your lifestyle, and you'd probably scare the security guards somehow anyway.

Jack made this comment,
You're Switzerland! While most people think you're sort of stuck up, it's really just that people don't interest you that much. That's why you'd rather just stay out of everything and be as neutral as possible. Somewhere in there is an ability to be a psychiatrist because you're so objective, but you might just be too cold for that.

You're Texas! You aren't really much of your own person, but everyone around you wishes you'd go away, so you might as well be independent. You're sort of loud-mouthed and abrasive, but you do have a fair amount of power. You like big trucks, big cattle, and big oil rigs. And sometimes you really smell. But it's not all bad, you're big enough to have some soft spots somewhere in all that redneck madness.

3 things you might not know about me

Tuesday, 6 June 2006

1) I think I have a washcloth fetish, I just did laundry, and am currently folding 40 washcloths and just a few hand towels ;-). I have two types: nice ones for showers and cheap ones (12 pack bundles) for whatever. I also have some other whatever cloths: large white cotton dishcloths that double as table cloths, chair covers, full body aprons for children, lettuce washers, montor, headbands when cleaning, tv screen covers and of course, as dish towels. The other whatever cloths are little round terry and flannel things that my friend K. makes from the remains of the cancer caps and respirator bibs from her charity works. These are stacked in the kitchen and are meant to replace paper towels and they work quite well. Any visitors to my place can always be assured of a clean washcloth, or 2, 5, 10...

2) In the past, I have had a problem collecting tables. For the past decade, I have been great at getting rid of excess tables and not adding anymore but during the past year's stressful times I have collected an additional 3 tables. These are all sewing table, and one of which is for a machine I do not own ;-) Current table/desk collection in my 2 bedroom apartment is 10! a kitchen/dining, a corner desk, 2 finnish desks, 3 sewing machine tables, a card table, and 2 glass/iron balcony tables. I hope I don't go back to collecting unusual chairs again. Luckily, the one I'd really like is beyond my means at the moment so I should be safe.

3) Once I really like a person & let them in, I tend to like them forever. I may go a while without communicating with them, but that doesn't mean I don't like them or am not thinking about them. I don't let many people that close to me, I am very slow to get used to someone and even slower to love, but once I do it seems permanent. You'd have to do something pretty horrible to get thrown out of my life. My relationship with them may change over time, morph into something else but I still have the same basic feelings about them. I seem more interested in the person than the actual perimeters of the relationship, I mean it becomes whatever the person and I choose it to be.

Laurie made this comment,
I've never had a friend who collects tables but now I do. :)

Lucky you ;-)!!!! I just realized I forgot the 2 cutting tables, a bookshelf with a writing leaf and a cedar chest that I use as a coffee table sometimes. So its actually 12 or 14 depending on the use of the cedar chest and whether the writing leaf counts. Also I have one of those folding tv tables that I didn't count

AL STEWART and Laurence Juber

Al Stewart is my favorite singer/songwriter. His music has been one of the few constants, outside my family and some friends, in my life during the past 30 yrs. Hearing him is always a thrill and inspiring in a way.

An hour and a half before the concert I got excited, finally! I must be pretty shut down, normally I am bouncing off the walls for weeks before. This time people kept asking "are you really going to hear Al?"

When I had to endure years of painful physical therapy I learned to shut down the feelings to my body, but my mind was still full on. Now I guess I have begun to shut down my mind as well. Its been a very long few years and I am tired, sometimes it feels like my spirit is broken or lost.

I was very methodical and organized this time, I even brought 2 rare cds for him to sign, which I never do. I usually listen to all Al all the time before, esp if I have a long drive to get there. I drove the 410 miles listening to a book on CD called Empress Orchid!.

I needed an Al concert fix bad! and it was great!!!

The venue was a bit strange, uptight in some ways esp for a school of
folk music! The seats were fine, thanks Rob & SM! According to
Neville Judd (whom I unfortunately upset again) they did 4 songs for
practice/sound check and that was it. I heard 2 of the songs.

The concert opened with Laurence. I found him amazingly perfect but
kind of soul less for the first couple songs, then he was fantastic.
At first he explained all this stuff for guitarists like tuning and
whatever ;-) but after a bit he toned that down. Maybe the glazed
over look of the audience... ;-)

He played
Mayby I'm amazed (from his "1 Rings Wepertoire")
One Wing cd

Pass the buck -his own composition

Strawberry Fields Forever (using alternative tunings which told the
audience, also did a push for his LJ Custom Martin " in
Madagascar Rosewood with an Adirondack top.")

Mosaic animal

Pink Panther theme from the Grammy #2 winning record. His story about
his first grammy was funny. It was while he was with Wings and their
illustrious leader was sitting in a Japanese jail at the time.
Something showed up in a box, that needed to be screwed together, so
he screwed it together, and thought maybe this is what a grammy looks
like, so he called the management and asked if they won a grammy and
they told him yeah, we forgot to tell you.

Stolen glances. He referred to his marriage of 25(?) yrs several
times throughout the concert. Early he explained that 25 yrs in a
marriage in LA was really equivalent to 100 yrs elsewhere. Before this
song he was talking about a place they were staying that had a really
long bathtub. As the water was running in the tub he wondered to his
wife about it being so loud. She told him it was because he had only
seen short bathtubs, but what he heard was because he was a short
bastard. When he ask why she would say such a thing, she answered
because its true. Then he said something about the joys of marriage
;-)

While my guitar gently weeps. This was amazing.

Cobalt blue.

Then Al played alone
Flying sorcery (an aerodynamic metaphor for lost love)
On the Border

Al and Laurence together:
Al said they decided they were both professionals so they didn't to
warm up/practice, or at least Laurence was. Al was right, Laurence was right on!

Night train to Munich very fast.
Al explained about how they did Between The Wars, Laurence's "sleuth productions"
and called him "one take Laurence. He said Laurence would play
something, put it down, Al would go home and write the words, come
back and put it down, thinking that they would record it for real
later, but Laurence went with what they put down then, or something to
that effect. So half the album was made before Al realized he was
making an album...

League of Notions-long explanation of Churchill's hiccup (that's part of Jordan.)

Lindy- Al says he never gets to sing this, but with Laurence there he could.

Time Passages- some very strange but wonderful instrumentals by Laurence.
This was really good, I would like it as a ring tone on my phone. So
far I have Peter playing Merlin's time, Al singing Katherine of
Oregon, here in Angola, Lear, Immelman turn and Christine McVie
singing everywhere.

Katherine of Oregon- Al talked of being 17 and playing wipe out, so
of course they had to play wipe out. Al also said "time goes by and
you're old and its not actually a bad thing"
for the refrain Al sang "Names in my memory are clear, then they're
gone again" instead of "Names in my memory are there, then they're
gone again"

Al talked said of all his albums he has liked 8 of them, disliked 8,
and he has liked all 3 that Laurence produced. He then said one was
very rare and hard to get. To which Neville yelled from the back "I
have it for sale" and Al replied "I bet you don't" Neville had the
following for sale: 30th anniversary t shirt, tour shirts, a best of
cd, down in the cellar and beach full of shells. I happened to have
Between the Wars with me which Al confirmed was the rare one. I don't
usually get my own stuff signed but since Al and Laurence were there I
did.

House of Clocks- he started out with his talking about the temptation
to play don't fear the reaper, so of course they played a bit of that.

Soho Needless to say- the usual stuff about it being rap. Al did say
it had more words than an entire Bee Gees album and that when he
couldn't get through it, it would be time to quit. He got through
it just fine.

Marion the Chatelaine- Al had to restart, he muttered something like,
oh yeah its "my sweet lord" chords.

Somewhere in England- Al said this was one of his favorites, the story
of Violet waving off the ship. He did have her wave off the train
first but then corrected himself ;)

The Encore

Al told the story about Yoko Ono, how he was her guitarist in 1967,
mainly because he owned a tape recorder, until of course she found
another guitarist. He demonstrated what he had played for 6 hrs, and
then did an imitation of Yoko singing "the snow is falling" which
completely cracked Laurence and the audience up. He also said he lent
Yoko 100 pounds to make a film which was basically 360 naked bottoms
which she wasn't able to pay back, and later he wrote John Lennon
regarding it and John sent him a check which he really agonized over
cashing but he needed the money...
Al said Laurence has played with 3 Beatles and Al with Yoko...

Gina on the Kings Road
YOTC

The set list also had possibilities of Mr. Lear, Broadway and apple
cider listed but not played. Flying sorcery is listed as flying sauce
;-)

I really like hearing Laurence with Al, it was a real treat. Their
excitement to be playing together just seemed to leap off the stage.
At one point Al discovered that there was a balcony in the place, he
seemed kind of startled. I hope he saw the woman in the balcony with
the leather mini, and over the knee tight boots not quite what I
imagine as Gina in the Kings road but the right period.

I couldn't get a cell signal in the hall, so no one got a song, sorry
:-( If I had gotten a signal, the volunteer ushers would have
probably confiscated my phone anyway, and 2 were nearby watching.

The venue was very strange, the workers there kind of stiff and rule
bound, but okay. When I grab the set list, the guy on cleaning up the
stage wasn't sure, finally he said if its okay with Al. I told him I
was going to ask Al to sign it.... which of course he did :-)

I am feeling so virtuous

packed my lunch ingredients last night and remembered to bring it with me to work.
rye thins, avocado, bucheron goat cheese, turkey breast, serious mustard. Made open faced sandwich, melted cheese in it. Pretty tasty! Drinking green Darjeeling tea with it. Also brought a spiffy Chinese rice crackers the kind that are sweet on one side and salty on the other, banana and some raw cashews for a mid afternoon snack so I have some energy for belly dance class tonight. You really do not want to eat before class.
I also ate breakfast and walked a few miles before I got here.

Sunday, April 23, 2006

After my previous post, I received some emails saying I was being too pessimistic regarding what might happen next in Nepal. That once the king restored power things would be alright.
Its wasn't pessimism or even gut feeling on my part, it was history. Things haven't been "all right" in Nepal for quite some time. Since the Maoist insurgence began in 1996, 13000 people have been killed. Most of those killed have been in the last 5 yrs. There are conditions that make the Maoist attractive to some of the population, and many have no choice.

There are a lot of women in the Maoist "army," which I unfortunately find very understandable. If I was a woman in the hills, doing subsistence farming, working 16 hrs days, only to be passed from father to husband, knowing that no matter how hard I worked, I and my loved ones could still starve, being a Maoist may not look that bad. Under those conditions if someone offered me food, a gun, power with the organization, and the dream of a better future, I would like to think I could resist, but it would be so tempting. Also what happens if you say no? Do you really have any choice? From what I understand support for the Maoists is often obtained through a do it or else method.

Beyond the status of women in Nepal, there is also the politicians who seem unwilling to compromise to work together towards the good of the people and country. This must change before anything gets better. One hopes the past year will convince them, but I doubt it.

Politics-The Peaceable kingdom

"A huge crowd of people broke several barricades set up by the police along the Ring Road and has reached Kalanki area from Maharajgunj, reports say. A journalist on the scene said the number of demonstrations could be as much as 300,000. The demonstrators are now marching along the 27-km Ring Road." Nepal News

In 2001, the population of Kathmandu was 700,000. 25 yrs ago it was 400,000, so given population increases and the Maoists uprising forcing people to escape into the city, it might be 800,000- 900,000. That means at least 1/3 of the city's population was protesting under a shoot on sight curfew!!! Wow!!! No wonder the King relinquish power.

The king took power back in Feb 2005 in an attempt to stop the civil war. An act of desperation by a man who never expected to become king. It is not so surprising that he would fail, especially as the previous government had also failed.

Now what happens? Does the blood bath get worse? Do the Maoist take over? Can the political parties actually work together this time? It is easy to unite the people against the monarchy, but can they be united for themselves, for the good of the country?

I have serious doubts about the Maoists, what they want for Nepal, and no doubt the entire world eventually, is far from democracy. As long as they see violence as a legit means to accomplish it, I can not see the situation getting any better.

From this distance, having watch the politics there over the past 26 yrs, it all seems unimaginable and so very sad.

Jaya Nepal!

Mom! Janet! Its Robbie!

I am going to do this quick, because if I don't it will never get posted, and I have so many drafts that I really ought to post, and some of them are quite bad of me not to, this one is not one of those but oh well here goes...

So I decide to not wait for the $2 theater ($1 on tues) to see Memories of a Geisha. I wanted to see the architecture, the costumes, ect... I was curious about the movie because I read the book the only non Japanese Geisha wrote years ago. I understand William Golden wrote his story based on her book. I didn't read much about the movie, just a bit, and it was a pan, So I rented it this week for $3.50. I watched the film yesterday and tonight watch the extras.

I liked the film, my initial reaction was why all are the Geisha Chinese? Seriously almost every living great Chinese actress is in it except Joan Chen, I almost expected Anita Mui to appear but of course she can't as she is dead. Once I got over the Chinese actresses, it was fun to watch, a bit dark, and the ending is a schmaltzy.

Watching the extras tonight I kept looking at the director. His facial expressions looked familiar and so was his speech. I kept thinking Marshall as in Penny and Garry Marshall but his accent didn't seem right. Then I watch the filmette on him and he began talking about when he started in show business and his two Univ of P. professor parents... and I realized "It's Robbie!!!!!"

He and his sister went to the faculty children swim and gym thing I went to in the summers. It was a fairly small group. We did gym stuff 1/2 the time, I mainly liked to jump on the trampoline until I wheezed ;-) and the other half the time we swam, sometimes raced other teams and played old style water polo. The kind where you can do anything to the person holding onto the ball. I loved playing water polo.
Robbie and his sister also went to my brother's school, Falk, the lab school, which didn't have many students.

Anyway, I wanted to call my mom and my high school friend, Janet but its too late!

Okay I am posting this now. I will post the other things later.

Hmmm. Only 2 degress to Chow Yun Fat! (and Andy Lau.)

I think I may have a quicker way to Kevin Bacon, a friend from college does sound in a lot of films.
