I have been sending Valentine's Day cards for many years. Not a big day for me but I realize it can be a make or break day for others, lots of hype and build up, so I try to send good thoughts to my friends. I guess it is a supportive, thinking of you type thing, an occasional testing of waters at times.
There was an article in the NYtimes about people's expectations of Valentine's Day and how hard it is for people who have only been dating a short while to appropriately respond to the possible expectations.
I find it so strange that people choose this day to propose, you would think they would want their own special day separate from the holiday.
I received my first and only hand delivered telegram in response to a Valentine I sent, my friend was feeling very sad and said my Valentine turned his day around so much he had to send it.
I never send mushy ones, just a beautiful card and the words Happy Valentine's Day. Occasionally I will write a bit more but nothing over the top.
Sent some new ones out and got a few interesting Valentines in return today, but mainly warm fuzzies.
One friend sent me "a hugs and kisses tornado" among other things which made me laugh and smile every time I try and imagine how that would be
I remember the first time I got chocolates on Valentine's Day, I was about 20 and a friend from a culture that doesn't even have an expression for "I love you" gave them to me!!! I always love chocolate but I wasn't expecting anything like that, I suspect his roommate encouraged him. I have been receiving valentine's gifts all weekend, lots of chocolate and a bar of exquisitely wrapped Glycerin Shea Butter w/ Sugar Cane Extract soap (???) I gave chocolate rose petal tea so I guess I am equally strange.
So Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!!! Don't take it too much to heart if "true love" evades you on this day, it is only 1 of 356 a year, and minor blip in the grand scheme of life.
